Lock Street Gaol

Built in 1880, this former prison held many women during Apartheid, including Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. Surrounded by a high stone wall and Georgian-style buildings, it now retains original cells, a restored gallows, and historical displays. Since 1981, parts of the site have been renovated, with some sections converted into shops. The Department of Arts and Culture plans to transform it into a Women’s Museum.
